Washington DC’s experimental jazz punk trio the Messthetics (drummer Brendan Canty and Joe Lally of iconic band Fugazi, and visionary guitarist Anthony Pirog) join forces with acclaimed jazz tenor saxophonist, composer and bandleader James Brandon Lewis. Together, they widen the reach of decisive instrumental music through their overlapping of jazz, punk, funk, aggression and innovation.

The Messthetics are guitar virtuoso Anthony Pirog, backed by the rhythm section of Fugazi, Joe Lally and Brendan Canty. James Brandon Lewis was the 2025 Downbeat artist of the year, and continually tops critic’s polls as one of today’s most visionary saxophonists. Together they have just released their second album, Deface the Currency, on the legacy jazz label Impulse! It is a high energy record full of beautiful, intricate melodies and soaring performances. Fusing heavy rhythms with avant-garde jazz guitar and saxophone.
