"...dangerous music, at times angry music, at others blissed-out, illuminating music with its thunderous rumblings and Ornette-inspired figures – delivering not so much a wash of sound, more a tidal wave." - LONDONJAZZ

Berne, Torn, and Smith have collaborated in many contexts over the years; this particular configuration was documented on their eponymous ECM release in March 2019.

With his singular approach to the guitar, Torn uses the instrument as a starting point to generate sonic landscapes. His gift for spontaneously creating these majestic and engrossing sound worlds has earned him a respected position as a producer and collaborator in improvised music and beyond - scoring films and TV, and collaborating with artists David Bowie, k.d. lang, Don Cherry and more.

In this band, Tim Berne's alto saxophone alternately luxuriates in and cuts above the guitar work. Berne has been declared “a saxophonist and composer of granite conviction” by The New York Times. Acclaim for the first, eponymous ECM album from Berne’s quartet Snakeoil came from far and wide, with The Guardian calling it “an object lesson in balancing composition, improvisation and the tonal resources of an acoustic band.”

Ches Smith generates a propulsive rhythmic layer, blending his own subtle use of electronics, a deep knowledge of Haitian drumming traditions, and a foundation in traditional drum kit performance. Originally from Sacramento, California and now based in New York, Ches has collaborated with a host of artists on many scenes since the early 2000s, including Marc Ribot, Tim Berne, John Zorn, Darius Jones, David Torn, John Tchicai, Nels Cline, Mary Halvorson, Trevor Dunn, Terry Riley, Kris Davis, Dave Holland, Secret Chiefs 3, Xiu Xiu, Good for Cows, Theory of Ruin, and Mr. Bungle, among others. He has nine records to his name as a bandleader that feature his writing and ensemble curation, and is a devout student of Haitian Vodou drums, performing in religious and folkloric contexts in New York and Haiti for the last decade. The New York Times observes Ches is “one of the wiliest drummers on the experimental scene.”
