Rosette’s ninth So Hot Right Now series features the music of Pulitzer Prize and Grammy®-winning composer Kevin Puts. The ensemble will perform two pieces: Home (2019) and Credo (2007).

Kevin Puts has established himself as one of America’s leading composers, gaining international acclaim for his “plush, propulsive” music (The New York Times), and described by Opera News as “a master polystylist.” He has been commissioned and performed by leading organizations around the world, including the Metropolitan Opera, Philadelphia Orchestra, Carnegie Hall, Opera Philadelphia, Minnesota Opera, and many more, and has collaborated with world-class artists such as Renée Fleming, Yo-Yo Ma, Yannick Nezet-Seguin, and Marin Alsop, among others.

Written in response to the 2015 refugee crisis in Europe, Home begins with an extended meditation on the key of C major, a sonic representation of “home”. This idyllic atmosphere is soon abandoned, however, in search of new and unfamiliar harmonic terrain. The idea of home returns in the end, but in a way that suggests that it’s been changed by the journey the work represents.

Credo is about finding small glimmers of hope, or things to believe in, when the world seems to be filled with darkness and despair. For the composer, writing this piece in 2007, that darkness included the U.S.-Iraq war and the shooting at Virginia Tech. Although he’s not generally one to rely on blind faith, Puts admits that there are times when it seems like all you can do is believe. Credo depicts three places where he unexpectedly found solace: a violin shop in upstate New York, a jogging path in Pittsburgh, and in watching a mother teach her daughter to dance.

So Hot Right Now is an innovative concert series curated and presented by Rosette, a string quartet based in Richmond, VA. The series highlights the music of one very hot, very alive composer by performing their music multiple times in a variety of venues over the course of one month. The first So Hot Right Now series took place in October of 2021 and featured the music of Caroline Shaw. Since then, Rosette has championed the work of Kenji Bunch, John Luther Adams, TJ Cole, Jerod Impichaachaaha’ Tate, Fodé Lassana Diabaté, Anna Clyne, and Derrick Skye.

Formed in 2015, Rosette is a Richmond-based string quartet made up of four women who love to make meaningful connections through music. In addition to the So Hot Right Now series, Rosette performs educational programs in schools, collaborates with Miramar, and gives concerts throughout Virginia.
