Vocalist Laura Ann Singh (Miramar, Quatro na Bossa) brings her rich and expressive voice for an intimate program of some of her favorite songs, reimagined for voice and strings. Joined by a stellar quartet of Richmond string players Ellen Cockerham Riccio, Treesa Gold, Kimberly Ryan, Peter Greydanus and bassist Ayça Kartari, Singh explores music by Joni Mitchell, Florence Welch, Laetitia Sadier, Carole King, Joyce Moreno, Sandy Denny, Dona Ivone Lara, Sylvia Rexach, Judee Sill, and more.
With arrangements by Marlysse Simmons, Trey Pollard, Curt Sydnor, Taylor Barnett, Mark Messing, and Max Moston, the program moves across genres and languages, finding unexpected connections between Brazilian music, folk, pop, and songwriters from across the Americas and beyond. At its heart is Singh’s longtime fascination with great songs—and the possibilities that emerge when they are stripped down and reshaped for voice and strings.
Laura Ann Singh is a vocalist, songwriter, and multilingual interpreter of song whose work bridges Brazilian music, Latin American repertoire, jazz, and experimental forms. The Guardian has described her voice as “luminous and emotionally precise,” a quality that underpins her wide-ranging artistic practice. She has performed internationally in Europe, Russia, and South America, and is a founding member of Miramar, with whom she has appeared on NPR’s Tiny Desk and headlined globalFEST in New York City. Her collaborative work includes performances with cellist and composer Tomeka Reid, arranger Doug Richards, trumpeter and composer John D’earth, and Richmond songwriters Curt Sydnor, Bruno Alcalde, and Phil Murphy. Her recorded output includes releases on Daptone, Barbès, Ansonia, and Out of Your Head Records, as well as numerous independent projects. Singh’s repertoire draws deeply from Brazil and Latin America while also engaging the American Songbook, women composers, experimental music, and her own original work, reflecting a practice rooted in both interpretive depth and creative exploration.
In October of 2025, Singh released her debut album of original songs, Mean Reds, with her Fracas Quintet featuring Scott Clark (drums), Adam Hopkins (bass), John Lilley (saxophone), and Bob Miller (trumpet). Also in 2025, Laura Ann began recording an album of commissioned arrangements of songs by women composers. Together with Rosette string quartet, she released Crumb of Me.
