The George Cruz Quintet brings together five musicians connected by Richmond’s vibrant jazz community, built through jam sessions, supporting each other’s performances, and friendships formed through a shared love of beauty, creativity, and honesty.

Led by pianist and composer George Cruz, the quintet explores the rich tradition of jazz while bringing their own voices and experiences into the music. George is a Richmond based musician originally from Norfolk and the Philippines, whose playing reflects a deep appreciation for the Black American musical tradition that shaped jazz. His sound draws from the beauty of swing, the harmony of modern jazz, and the spirit of soul and gospel music.

This performance features original music from Cruz’s second album, “Maybe Tomorrow,” along with new unreleased compositions written by George and members of the band. The group will also explore jazz standards and soul tunes through their own perspective, bringing together the sounds and influences that have shaped each musician.

The quintet features saxophonists Nate Clark and Charles Owens, bassist Michael Hawkins, and drummer Karl Tietze. Each member brings a unique musical history and perspective, from years of performing locally and internationally to deep roots in education, composition, and the jazz tradition.

Nate Clark has been an active part of Richmond’s music scene for years, performing with groups throughout the area and bringing a wide range of influences into his playing. His approach reflects a love for all styles of music and a constant curiosity that keeps his sound fresh and expressive.

Charles Owens is a celebrated saxophonist, composer, bandleader, and educator with a career spanning over 25 years. After years of performing and studying in New York City, Charles has become an essential part of the Richmond and Virginia jazz community, bringing a deep knowledge of the tradition and a powerful, soulful voice to every performance.

The rhythm section of the quintet features bassist Michael Hawkins and drummer Karl Tietze, two musicians with extensive experience performing alongside some of the most respected artists in jazz. This performance is a celebration of friendship, community, and the continuing story of music, honoring the past while creating something personal, alive, and meaningful in the present.
