FONVILLE x FRIBUSH is the brand new musical collaboration from acclaimed drummer Corey Fonville (Butcher Brown) and organ player Sam Fribush. Charlie Hunter introduced the two young producers, allowing their collective ear, musical talents and friendship to bring out the best in one another. Their debut album (featuring guitarist Alan Parker) is a tasty mixture that just may reignite a newfound appreciation for the organ trio sound. Meant to inspire a generation that’s ready for something more than reimagined blues, funk and boogaloo, this project pushes the limits of organ trio music into something more youthful and fresh. At the end of the day, they’ve created music for the people – blue collar jazz – which comes together in a fly and extremely palatable way.
Corey Fonville, an influential drummer in today's music scene, has dedicated his life to learning the craft and its history in order to be one of the best drummers of his time. As an artist and music-enthusiast, he studied a variety of genres, mostly through his fathers music collection, which generally consisted of jazz, R&B, alternative, and funk. His skills are rooted in an eclectic background and call attention to the fact that music is hard to typify. Almost immediately after completing his studies at The Brubeck Institute, he began traveling the world with notable artists such as Nicholas Payton, Jacky Terrasson, and Christian Scott. Corey is currently working with Christian Scott Additionally, Corey has his own band Butcher Brown which he plans to continue recording with them and hopes to keep building an international fan base. Corey was nominated for a Grammy in 2023 in the Best Alternative Jazz Album: SuperBlue: The Iridescent Spree.
Keyboardist Sam Fribush is on the frontlines of the Hammond organ revival. His debut release was produced by Charlie Hunter and recorded in North Carolina. The trio's new record 'People Please' was released March 15th, 2024. Over the past few years, Fribush has established himself as one of the country’s hottest young bandleaders and People Please pushes the keyboardist’s music into new and uncharted territory, revealing a deep affinity for crispy, wah-wah driven funk, Hip-hop beats and sultry HAMMOND ballads. Says Fribush, “My intention is to take this music into the future. I’m trying to expand the rules about what organ trio music is.” Indeed, the album places Fribush’s music not only among the giants of soul jazz–Ronnie Foster, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Larry Young–but also in the pantheon of funkateers like Sly Stone and the Meters.
Morgan Burrs is a guitarist and producer based in Los Angeles (formerly in RVA). He's a full-time member of Butcher Brown, and has also recorded and toured with Snoh Aalegra, Alex Isley, Mac Ayres, Rapsody, and 9th Wonder.
Sasha Berliner is a rock drummer turned vibraphonist. She was introduced to the instrument while attending Oakland School for the Arts in California. She moved to New York City in 2016 to attend the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, studying under acclaimed vibraphonist Stefon Harris. Harris’ influence on Sasha, in particular with regard to harmony, directly aided the development of her unique style. Sasha’s first marquee show on the NYC scene was at NYC Winter Jazz Fest in 2018, followed soon after by Atlanta Jazz Fest and Burlington Jazz Fest.
She was the first US recipient of the LetterOne “Rising Stars” Jazz Award in 2019, providing Sasha with an opportunity to tour as a band leader, while also facilitating the creation of her debut album Azalea in 2019. Azalea was nominated for JazzTimes 2019 Readers’ Poll’s “Best New Release” and has been described as “shimmering and thoughtful” (Kassel, TIDAL), “gleefully exploring various genres and headspaces” (Tremblay, CTEBCM). The record’s politically charged, style-blending, alternative jazz sound employs digital effects, synths, audio speech samples, and strings, bringing together Sasha’s diverse musical background and influences.
The following year, Sasha was named winner of the 2020 Downbeat Critics’ Poll “Rising Star – Vibraphone” category. She was both the first woman, and at 21, the youngest individual in the poll’s history to receive the award. She has been voted one of the top ten vibraphonists in Downbeat Reader’s Polls every year since 2021. Sasha commissioned works for Modern Marimba and the SWR NewJAZZ Meeting as artist-in-residence for fall 2021, which resulted in her suite of live music entitled Tabula Rasa, released on CD in May 2023.
Sasha released two more studio LPs, Onyx (2022) and Fantome (2025), featuring all-star musicians such as Marcus Gilmore, Burniss Travis II, James Francies, Jaleel Shaw, and Taylor Eigsti. Onyx, released on boutique label JMI Recordings, was tracked entirely analog to tape and voted one of the best jazz albums of the year by UK Vibe, Textura, JazzVinyl Collector, and the 17th Annual Francis Davis Jazz Poll. Modern jazz leaning Fantome was a product of Sasha’s desire to elusify the definition of modern jazz in 2025 – over 100 years after jazz’s inception, rendering the genre label and it’s canonical connotations of swing and pure acousticity “phantom”.
Sasha has headlined international venues like Newport Jazz Festival, The Blue Note, Montreal Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, and Monterey Jazz Festival. In addition to performing with her own band, she has recorded and performed live with such renowned musicians as Tyshawn Sorey, Nicholas Payton, Christian McBride, and Cecile Mclorin Salvant. She is an endorsing artist for Ludwig/Musser and Vater Drumsticks. Sasha has been a guest lecturer at University of Champaign-Illinois, UC San Diego, Stanford Jazz Workshop, and Berklee College of Music, and is currently a Professor of Jazz and Jazz Composition at UC Irvine. Her current project, a new electric band entitled “Arts & Sciences” that features affected vibraphone sound and the electronic MalletKAT, is scheduled to debut its first EP in fall of 2026.
