BACH ARTILLERIE + CAROLINE SCRUGGS

An exhilarating evening pairing the music of JS Bach (rendered with synthesizers) with groovy theremin. A one-night-only performance by two ensembles exploring the frontiers of electronic classical and retro roots. It's the perfect soundtrack for a mid-week martini.

BACH ARTILLERIE is Curt Sydnor's reimagining of JS Bach's nine canons from the Goldberg Variations performed live on synthesizers and drums. Curt is a Virginia-based concert pianist, composer and music educator. Equally at home in classical, jazz and contemporary music settings, Curt has graduate degrees in classical and jazz piano performance (double major) from the prestigious Jacobs School at Indiana University, where he also served on the faculty, and classical piano from the world-renown Russian Academy of Music, Moscow.

The Berliner Philharmoniker: "Bach’s Goldberg Variations are a musical peak that almost all major pianists have attempted to scale over the course of time. A fascinating piece that continues to hold mysteries to this day. In 1741, a new work by Johann Sebastian Bach was published by the Nuremberg music engraver Balthasar Schmid: Aria with diverse variations for a harpsichord with two manuals Composed for Music Lovers to Refresh their Spirits. Later, this work was given the more manageable, nicer and imaginative title, the Goldberg Variations."

"The Goldberg Variations are written for a two-manual harpsichord. The most virtuosic variations involve intersecting lines in which the hands on one manual would constantly come into conflict with each other. Unlike symphony orchestras, pianists have never allowed Bach’s piano works to be taken from them by the representatives of historically informed performance practice: the specific difficulties of the Goldberg Variations became challenges that, to everyone’s astonishment, the 22-year-old Glenn Gould in 1955 was the first to master truly perfectly and with captivating drive."

This is a pre-release show with LPs and CDs for sale in advance of the album's official April 24 release. Featuring Emre Kartari on drums. Additional unreleased music featuring special guests to follow.

The evening begins with CAROLINE SCRUGGS. A thereminist, composer, and explorer of sound, Caroline's work often unfolds beyond the concert hall. Equally at home in symphonic and experimental settings, she collaborates with composers and ensembles across the U.S. Her theremin performances—captured both on stage and in nature—have reached over 15 million viewers on social media, bringing the rare and otherworldly instrument to a global audience. Traveling the globe with her instrument, she performs in forests, deserts, mountains, and shorelines—places where the theremin’s voice meets the natural world. These performances are as much conversations as concerts: the instrument responding to wind, silence, and space, creating moments that blur the line between human presence and the environment. In 2024 she released her debut solo album, Space, which bridges acoustic and electronic sound worlds to reflect on the mystical and the everyday. Throughout her work, Caroline invites listeners to experience music not only as art, but as connection—to nature, to wonder, and to the unseen.
