Victor Haskins & Skein

African Diasporic Fusion
Victor Haskins & Skein

Soul-stirring modern jazz influenced by the African diaspora.

Victor Haskins & Skein stands as a pioneering force in contemporary music, seamlessly blending original electroacoustic compositions with elements of storytelling, philosophy, and African diasporic influences. Each performance serves as a multidimensional tapestry, intricately weaving together emotional depth, intellectual engagement, and textured sonic landscapes, creating an immersive musical journey for the audience. On this particular night, the Skein will be making world premieres of never-before-heard new original music by Victor Haskins.

Their latest album, "Ikigai," draws inspiration from the Japanese concept of finding one's "reason for living," embodying Haskins' deeply personal philosophies and interactions. Tracks like "A New Way" delve into themes of internal struggle and renewal, with brooding basslines giving way to soaring cornet melodies, mirroring the complexities of self-discovery. "Alone with My Thoughts" transports listeners to moments of introspection, with deliberate pauses and ethereal synthesizer sounds evoking a serene atmosphere of contemplation. Meanwhile, "To Seek Understanding" serves as a musical tribute to life's invaluable lessons, guiding listeners through moments of conflict and resolution with soulful melodies and dynamic rhythms.

In addition to their musical explorations, Victor Haskins & Skein have delved into the rich rhythms of Candomblé, a syncretic religion from Brazil. Inspired by a transformative learning experience in Salvador, Bahia, Haskins crafted a suite of compositions that intricately intertwine Candomblé rhythms with his personal growth journey.

Compositions like "Everything Is a Game, Somehow" and "Thought Is Free" blend Afro-Brazilian grooves with avant-garde improvisation, offering listeners a window into the power and spirituality of these sacred rhythms. "Everything Is a Game, Somehow" invites listeners to embrace life's challenges with playful vigor, while "Thought Is Free" empowers them to open their minds and free their thoughts through syncopated rhythms and evocative melodies.

Each composition within this suite explores different facets of humanity through the lens of these spiritual rhythms, offering a diverse array of sonic experiences. Victor Haskins' aesthetic for composition is akin to crafting immersive board games, with each piece offering a unique journey while allowing room for improvisation and interpretation.

Through their captivating performances, Victor Haskins & Skein invite audiences to embark on a soul-stirring exploration of musical discovery, leaving them inspired to embrace greater possibilities in their own lives.
