The theremin is an instrument you don’t touch. Your hands move through the air, shaping pitch and volume through invisible electromagnetic fields, creating a sound that can feel at once human, otherworldly, eerie, tender, and completely strange. For Spirit Sessions, Richmond thereminist and composer Caroline Scruggs takes this peculiar instrument out of its usual haunted-house associations and drops it into a whole range of musical worlds. Joined by some of Richmond’s most adventurous musicians, Caroline explores what happens when the theremin meets different genres, voices, textures, and traditions—reimagining familiar songs, sharing original music, and creating unexpected collaborations along the way.

Featuring local music artists Prabir Mehta and Erin Roukous, the evening will move between the recognizable and the uncanny, the composed and the spontaneous, with curious conversations and perhaps a few friendly ghosts along the way. Come for the music. Stay for the strange.

A thereminist, composer, and explorer of sound, Caroline's work often unfolds beyond the concert hall. Equally at home in symphonic and experimental settings, she collaborates with composers and ensembles across the U.S. Her theremin performances—captured both on stage and in nature—have reached over 15 million viewers on social media, bringing the rare and otherworldly instrument to a global audience. Traveling the globe with her instrument, she performs in forests, deserts, mountains, and shorelines—places where the theremin’s voice meets the natural world. These performances are as much conversations as concerts: the instrument responding to wind, silence, and space, creating moments that blur the line between human presence and the environment. In 2024 she released her debut solo album, Space, which bridges acoustic and electronic sound worlds to reflect on the mystical and the everyday. Throughout her work, Caroline invites listeners to experience music not only as art, but as connection—to nature, to wonder, and to the unseen.
