Considered by many to be the finest jazz trombonist of all time, J.J. Johnson transferred the innovations of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie to his instrument. Throughout the 1940s and 50s he played with many of the top bop musicians, including Parker, Gillespie, Illinois Jacquet, Sonny Stitt, Clifford Brown, and Miles Davis. He was at the forefront of the ambitious Third Stream movement in jazz, starting with 1956’s “Poem for Brass,” and including “El Camino Real” and “Perceptions.” During the 1970s Johnson would move to Hollywood to write television and film scores, before returning to a full time performance schedule in 1987. His playing, defined by a pure sound, clean attack and melodic sensibilities continues to influence musicians today.
