The Hot Seats play stringband music, which encompasses old time, bluegrass, ragtime, country, and general freakout music. Based in Richmond, VA, the group has toured the US and Europe including performances at the Shetland Folk Festival, Orkney Folk Festival, SXSW, Floyd Fest, Bristol Rhythm and Roots Festival, Richmond Folk Festival, and Edinburgh Festival Fringe (including a Herald Angel Award in 2006).
Since 2020, the band’s original core of Ben Belcher (banjo, bass, fiddle), Josh Bearman (mandolin, banjo, guitar) and Jake Sellers (percussion bass) have been joined by Rudy Bee (fiddle, tuba, accordion, piano), JM Nobile (mandolin, guitar), and Charles Arthur (banjo, fiddle, resophonic guitar).
The ensemble uses traditional instrumentation - fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin, and upright bass - in often whimsical and unconventional ways. The chances of yelling "YEEHAW" at the top of your lungs is 99.9%. If not you, then someone else probably will.
"The Hot Seats specializes in unearthing and inventing traditional music and twisting it into new concoctions. Full of virtuosity and reverent irreverence, they are a sight to behold." - Relix Magazine
Opening the show: The Vulgar Bulgars have been bringing their irreverent take on traditional Klezmer music to the wilderness of central Virginia since 2003. With creative arrangements and wild energy, they add an exciting new sound to the genre. The quartet includes: Kassia Arbabi (fiddle), Ezra Freeman (bass), Ben Grondahl (clarinet), CJ Alicea (drums)
