THE BUTTERBEAN JAZZ QUARTET PLAYS BURT BACHARACH

THE BUTTERBEAN JAZZ QUARTET PLAYS BURT BACHARACH

An all-star ensemble featuring LAURA ANN SINGH and CHARLES ARTHUR perform the legendary songwriter's smash hits.

Burt Bacharach is one of the most accomplished popular composers of the 20th Century. In the ’60s and ’70s, he was a dominant figure in pop music, racking up a remarkable 52 Top 40 hits. In terms of style, Bacharach’s songs differed from much of the music of the era. Bacharach compositions typically boasted memorable melodies, unconventional and shifting time signatures, and atypical chords. Combining elements of jazz, pop, Brazilian music and rock, Bacharach created a unique new sound that embodied the time. Bacharach's hits include "What The World Needs Now is Love", "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head", "(They Long to Be) Close To You", "Walk On By", "I'll Never Fall In Love Again", and "What's New Pussycat?" Bacharach passed away in 2023 at the age of 94, leaving behind a vast legacy of music that has inspired generations of songwriters.

Laura Ann Singh is a multilingual American singer, recording artist and composer, often associated with musica popular brasileira and Latin boleros. She has performed internationally in Europe, Russia, and South America, and with Miramar has been featured on NPR’s Tiny Desk and headlined globalFEST in New York City. She has recorded with Daptone Records, Barbès Records, and Electric Cowbell as well as dozens of independent recordings. Her repertoire pulls from all over Latin America, especially Brazil, but includes American Songbook standards, women composers, and original music. In October of 2025, Singh released her debut album of original songs, Mean Reds, with her Fracas Quintet. Also in 2025, Laura Ann began recording an album of commissioned arrangements of songs by women composers. Together with Rosette string quartet, she released Crumb of Me. In 2023, she was the featured vocalist on the Doug Richards Orchestra’s Through a Sonic Prism: The Music of Antonio Carlos Jobim. Laura Ann is a founding member of the internationally acclaimed ensemble Miramar.

Charles “King” Arthur is a classic troubadour - a veteran musician whose career has led him down virtually every musical road. Charles is a multi-instrumentalist adjunct instructor and ensemble director at The University of Richmond. In 2005, he started the school's first Bluegrass Ensemble, and in 2008 he began the American Roots Ensemble, which focuses on the Blues. In addition to teaching, Charles makes his living as a musician, and has toured the United States, Canada, and UK with award-winning Americana artist Slaid Cleaves.

This project is organized by Rusty Farmer, an accomplished and versatile bassist and bandleader from Richmond. While at VCU, he studied with Clarence Seay, Mark Bernat, Paul Langosch, Victor Dvoskin, Doug Richards, Paul Bedell and John D’earth. Rusty has performed with many great musicians such as Harry Allen, Hod O’Brien, Stanley Jordan, Nate Smith, Romera Lubambo, and Royce Campbell. He has performed at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club numerous times with Quatro na Bossa and at The Kennedy Center with Miramar.
