Magdalena strives to make period music accessible and enjoyable to all through immersive storytelling, genre expansion, and interdisciplinary endeavors.

Early music collective Magdalena presents a show of ballads and dance tunes from the British Isles dating as far back as the 16th century. Featuring special guest Tina Chancey on fiddle, this set will move from raunchy barroom drinking songs to heartbreaking ballads of love and tragedy, interleaved with tunes from John Playford’s “The Dancing Master” (1651) and other sources. These songs are one of the greatest forms of musical storytelling - come join us for an afternoon of tunes and connection.

Launched in 2022, Magdalena is a self-directed collective of early and folk music specialists, including Liv Castor (harp), Mira Fu-En Huang (voice/percussion), Cole Manel (plectrum instruments), Niccolo Seligmann (bowed strings/percussion), Sarah Shodja (winds), and Cameron Welke (plucked strings). The ensemble has performed in Maryland, Virginia, New York, Washington DC, and Cleveland, with acclaimed performances for Early Music NOW in Wisconsin and the Indianapolis Early Music Festival in Indiana. Magdalena was also thrilled to be selected as one of Early Music America’s Emerging Artists of 2024.
