Kofi Shepsu Group + Tim Green

Kofi Shepsu Group + Tim Green

Sublime modern jazz led by a powerhouse drummer with a Grammy-nominated saxophonist.

Kofi Shepsu is an African percussionist and studied the West African drums for 7 years under the master Baba Olumide, starting at age 4. He was formally introduced to jazz and the drum set as a member of the Richmond Youth Jazz Guild under the direction of Ashby Anderson. Kofi received a full scholarship for Berklee College of Music Summer Jazz Workshop with Terri Lyne Carrington. He is a 2017 Young Arts Jazz and Vail Jazz Workshop Finalist. In addition, he was selected in 2017 to attend Berklee College of Music Global Jazz Institute/Newport Jazz Festival. He is a 2018 graduate of Appomattox Regional Governor’s School for the Arts and Technology. Kofi was also awarded a full scholarship to Manhattan School of Music. While there he got to study with master musicians Buster Williams, Kendrick Scott and Marc Cary. His goal is to be a music ambassador for Jazz and has played with Savion Glover, Marc Cary, Rodney Whitaker, Charles Owens, Benny Benack III, and Julius Rodriguez.

Grammy-nominated saxophonist, composer, arranger and educator Tim Green is a wide-ranging artist of deep passion and unflagging individuality. He leads his own dynamic bands and supplying the soul for ensembles across the musical spectrum. Green has become a saxophonist of choice for many of jazz’s most revered pianists, a testament to his brilliant feel and his instinct for blending that singular personality into the sound of a band. Green has been featured on stage and recordings with such keyboard masters as his mentor Mulgrew Miller, Eric Reed, Patrice Rushen, Larry Willis, Orrin Evans, Allyn Johnson and Alex Brown, and as part of Cyrus Chestnut’s band Affirmation. “Tim Green is a dynamic musician,” says Christian McBride, the multiple Grammy Award-winning bassist. “If you make a checklist of everything you’d want in a musician, Tim has it all.”

McBride’s praise rings true given the diverse range of situations into which Green’s saxophone artistry has been invited. He has performed and recorded with some of the most recognized names in jazz, gospel, R&B, hip-hop and pop music, including McBride, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Jon Faddis, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige, Toni Braxton, Mariah Carey, Earth Wind and Fire, Aretha Franklin, Jill Scott, Jennifer Hudson, The Cookers, Common, Ravi Coltrane, Eddie Palmeri, Fantasia, Carl Allen, Rodney Whitaker, Mo’ Horns, Joe Chambers, Kirk Franklin, Donnie McClurkin, and Yolanda Adams.

The band includes: Garen Dorsey (piano); Jack Aylor (bass); Tim Green (saxophone); Kofi Shepsu (drums).
