Drummer Kevin Gaines has deep roots in the RVA jazz scene and beyond. Frequently accompanying pianist Dr. Weldon Hill and bassist Michael Hawkins, on this special occasion show Kevin is joined by bassist JImmy Trussell, pianist Ayinde Williams, and vocalist Tina Hashemi. The ensemble plays jazz classics and deep cuts with fire, passion, and soul. The intimate listening room vibe of the Révéler stage provides the perfect setting for this remarkable ensemble.
Special guest vocalist Tina Hashemi studied jazz vocal performance under Stephanie Nakasian and John D’earth at the University of Virginia. Her pure, unaffected tone, her sense of swing, and her creativity as an improviser with big ears and stores of imagination has made her a favorite with some of the most advanced musicians in the Virginia/D.C. area. Paul Langosch, who played with Tony Bennet for decades, Daniel Clarke, who was KD Lang’s pianist, and tenor saxophonist Charles Owens are now colleagues and fans of the sweet sensibility she brings to classic jazz standards and the Great American Songbook.

Listen // Be mindful of what other players are doing. Be mindful of dynamics. It's OK to not play - music needs silence, too.
