Joe Morris is a composer/improviser multi-instrumentalist who plays guitar, double bass, mandolin, banjo, banjouke electric bass and drums. He is also a recording artist, educator, record producer, concert producer/curator and author. His is considered to be one of the most original and important improvising musicians of our time. Down Beat magazine called him “the preeminent free music guitarist of his generation.” Will Montgomery, writing in The Wire magazine called him “one of the most profound improvisers at work in the U.S.” He is featured as leader, co-leader and sideman on 150 recordings to date. He has performed or recorded with John Zorn, Mary Halvorson, Tomeka Reid, Tim Berne, and many others.
Nicole Mitchell is an award-winning creative flutist, composer, conceptualist, bandleader, and educator. For over 20 years, Mitchell’s critically acclaimed Chicago-based Black Earth Ensemble has been her primary compositional laboratory. She is perhaps best known for her work as a flutist, having developed a unique improvisational language. More recently, as Professor of Composition and Computer Technologies at University of Virginia, Mitchell has added electronic instrumentation to that dialogue.
JoVia Armstrong is a Detroit-born percussionist, composer, sound artist, and educator. Her genre-blending work fuses experimental music, Black musical traditions, and immersive technology, creating transformative sonic experiences that take audiences into Afrofuturistic worlds. She was named 2014 Best Black Female Percussionist of the Year by the Black Women in Jazz Awards, became a member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) in 2015, and served on its executive board. Her extensive performance history includes collaborations with El DeBarge, Omar, Les Nubians, Res, Rahsaan Patterson, Joe Vasconcellos, Eric Roberson, Frank McComb, The Impressions, Isaiah Sharkey, and many others. As a bandleader, her project Eunoia Society explores immersive technology and therapeutic soundscapes, while her work with Detroit-based Musique Noire has garnered multiple Detroit Music Awards nominations. A trailblazer in contemporary percussion, Armstrong performs on her signature hybrid cajón kit—an inventive fusion of the cajón’s earthy resonance with processed effects, cymbals, and a range of percussive textures. Winner of DownBeat 73rd Annual Critics Poll for Rising Star Percussionist of the Year (2025), Armstrong has become one of the most dynamic voices in modern jazz.
