FONVILLE x FRIBUSH is the brand new musical collaboration from acclaimed drummer Corey Fonville (Butcher Brown) and organ player Sam Fribush. Charlie Hunter introduced the two young producers, allowing their collective ear, musical talents and friendship to bring out the best in one another. Their debut album (featuring guitarist Alan Parker) is a tasty mixture that just may reignite a newfound appreciation for the organ trio sound. Meant to inspire a generation that’s ready for something more than reimagined blues, funk and boogaloo, this project pushes the limits of organ trio music into something more youthful and fresh. At the end of the day, they’ve created music for the people – blue collar jazz – which comes together in a fly and extremely palatable way.

Corey Fonville, an influential drummer in today's music scene, has dedicated his life to learning the craft and its history in order to be one of the best drummers of his time. As an artist and music-enthusiast, he studied a variety of genres, mostly through his fathers music collection, which generally consisted of jazz, R&B, alternative, and funk. His skills are rooted in an eclectic background and call attention to the fact that music is hard to typify. Almost immediately after completing his studies at The Brubeck Institute, he began traveling the world with notable artists such as Nicholas Payton, Jacky Terrasson, and Christian Scott. Corey is currently working with Christian Scott Additionally, Corey has his own band Butcher Brown which he plans to continue recording with them and hopes to keep building an international fan base. Corey was nominated for a Grammy in 2023 in the Best Alternative Jazz Album: SuperBlue: The Iridescent Spree.

Keyboardist Sam Fribush is on the frontlines of the Hammond organ revival. His debut release was produced by Charlie Hunter and recorded in North Carolina. The trio's new record 'People Please' was released March 15th, 2024. Over the past few years, Fribush has established himself as one of the country’s hottest young bandleaders and People Please pushes the keyboardist’s music into new and uncharted territory, revealing a deep affinity for crispy, wah-wah driven funk, Hip-hop beats and sultry HAMMOND ballads. Says Fribush, “My intention is to take this music into the future. I’m trying to expand the rules about what organ trio music is.” Indeed, the album places Fribush’s music not only among the giants of soul jazz–Ronnie Foster, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Larry Young–but also in the pantheon of funkateers like Sly Stone and the Meters.

This edition of the organ trio features Matthew Stevens on guitar. A leading guitarist of his generation, two-time Grammy-nominated Matthew Stevens's "singular style dissolves the demarcation lines between jazz, rock, and ambient music," (Mojo). Stevens’s music is “honest and soulful” (Pitchfork.) and is described as “music [that] advances the ideals of modern jazz” (WBGO). In addition to his critically acclaimed solo albums, Woodwork, Preverbal, Pittsburgh and In Common 1, 2 and 3 with Walter Smith III, Stevens’s songs and guitar playing are featured on over 50 recordings including those by Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, Esperanza Spalding, Terri Lyne Carrington, Dave Douglas, NEXT Collective, Sean Jones, Linda May Han Oh, Harvey Mason, and Anna B Savage. Stevens has performed at top venues and festivals all over the world with his groups as well as being a featured performer with artists from Chris Thile to Gustavo Dudamel. His performances have been lauded in Billboard, The Fader, The Guardian, Guitar Player Magazine, JazzTimes, Mojo, NPR, New York Times, Pitchfork, PopMatters, and more.

As a producer, Stevens worked on Esperanza Spalding’s groundbreaking album Exposure, and her Grammy-winning album 12 Little Spells. He also co-produced Terri Lyne Carrington’s Grammy-nominated albums Waiting Game and New Standards. Most recently, Stevens produced I Am A Pilgrim: Doc Watson at 100, which features artists including Valerie June, Dolly Parton, Rosanne Cash, Marc Ribot, Bill Frisell, and Steve Earle.
