Dan Young is a saxophonist, bandleader, composer, and occasional whistler hailing from Massachusetts. He graduated from the jazz program at Temple University under the mentorship of Dick Oatts, and his playing reflects a deep preoccupation with resonance, harmonics, and color. As the resident MC and saxophonist of the BeSides, he leads a band that serves as the primary vehicle for his compositional work — music shaped by the Sandole Brothers, John Coltrane, and a restless ear for texture and sound. He brings that same curiosity and commitment to every project he touches.
Jasyn Brazoban is a Philadelphia-based freelance trombonist, bandleader, and arts activist who has established himself as one of the city's most versatile and in-demand musicians. His performance credits span major stages including Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, The Met Philly, and the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. He contributed as trombonist to Tye Tribbett's All Things New: Live in Orlando, winner of the 2024 Grammy Award for Best Gospel Album, and has performed alongside Tribbett at Roots Picnic in his hometown of Philadelphia. Off the bandstand, Jasyn works closely with the American Federation of Musicians to help develop strategies that support and strengthen the artist ecosystem in Philadelphia — a commitment to community that runs as deep as his commitment to the music.
Roy Hargrove didn't just play jazz — he made it feel necessary. A trumpet prodigy out of Dallas, he emerged in the late '80s and quickly became one of the defining voices of his generation. From the straight-ahead fire of Earfood to the genre-defying funk and soul of the RH Factor to the Latin jazz explorations of Habana with Crisol, his recorded work reflected a musician who refused to stay in one lane. He was a core part of the neo-soul movement's backbone, recording and performing with D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, Common, and others, bringing jazz musicianship into rooms that didn't always expect it. His sound carried the whole tradition while pushing it somewhere new: hard bop intensity, neo-soul warmth, Latin fire, hip-hop swagger, all fused together by a musicianship that was as sophisticated as it was deeply felt. When he died in 2018 at just 49, the loss was enormous.
His influence continues to run deep — Hargrove's music is a direct inspiration behind Jasyn Brazoban's Philadelphia-based group The Chronicles. The compositions he left behind are vivid, grooving, harmonically rich, and wide open for interpretation — which is exactly what makes them perfect for a night like this.
