A SONDHEIM CELEBRATION

featuring JOHN WINN, LAURA ANN SINGH, ELLE MEEROVICH, and MADDY CURTIS

A SONDHEIM CELEBRATION

A birthday celebration of the poignant lyricism and composition of the late Stephen Sondheim, one of the most profound musical theatre composers of all time, interpreted and performed by an all-star ensemble.

John Winn, Laura Ann Sigh, Elle Meerovich, and Maddy Curtis are no strangers to the Richmond music and theatre scene and make up the cast of many different characters for the evening. They will be performing various pieces from many of Sondheim's musicals, including: Company, Into the Woods, West Side Story (lyrics), Sunday in the Park with George, Merrily We Roll Along, and more. As well as a few deep cuts for those dedicated Sondheim-lovers! The evening will be a journey through these works, show-by-show, and will make you laugh and cry with all the twists and turns Sondheim delivered so carefully throughout his writing and composition.

When John Winn steps on stage, he brings an element of versatility that is seldom heard amongst jazz bands. John's lush vocal timbre has been compared to those of Chet Baker and Harry Connick, Jr., and his scat singing follows the traditions of Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, and Mel Torme. As a saxophonist and clarinetist, John has appeared on stage with luminaries such as Tony Bennett, Aretha Franklin, Arturo Sandoval, Lou Rawls, Steve Lawrence and Edy Gourmet, Ben Vereen, Chita Rivera, Dianne Schuur, John Pizzarelli, Jon Faddis, Milt Hinton, Jimmy Heath, Doc Severinson, Christian McBride, and Branford Marsalis.

Laura Ann Singh is a multilingual American singer, recording artist and composer, often associated with musica popular brasileira and Latin boleros. She has performed internationally in Europe, Russia, and South America, and with Miramar has been featured on NPR’s Tiny Desk and headlined globalFEST in New York City. She has recorded with Daptone Records, Barbès Records, and Electric Cowbell as well as dozens of independent recordings. Her repertoire pulls from all over Latin America, especially Brazil, but includes American Songbook standards, women composers, and original music. In October of 2025, Singh released her debut album of original songs, Mean Reds, with her Fracas Quintet. Also in 2025, Laura Ann began recording an album of commissioned arrangements of songs by women composers. Together with Rosette string quartet, she released Crumb of Me. In 2023, she was the featured vocalist on the Doug Richards Orchestra’s Through a Sonic Prism: The Music of Antonio Carlos Jobim. Laura Ann is a founding member of the internationally acclaimed ensemble Miramar.

Elle Meerovich is an actor/playwright/composer based in Richmond, VA. They began writing after dropping out of college in the summer of 2016, and their work has been produced all over the east coast (Well, from Richmond to New York, anyway). They write plays, lyrics, musicals, and the occasional diary entry. After a stint at Richmond's Firehouse Theatre as Playwright in Residence, Meerovich co-founded DOG STUFF, a theatre collective, aiming to create and study exciting and unconventional theatre. And while their surreal style might make it seem like their plays are just stupid fun- which they are- there is usually a moral to be learned, somewhere. Usually.

Maddy Curtis is a versatile vocalist, actor, and composer. She is mostly known around Richmond as a jazz vocalist, but is no stranger to the musical theater or opera stage. She dips her toes into any musical genre she has the pleasure of being a part of. She was most recently seen in Asheville Musical Theatre's Songs for a New World and some of her other favorite roles include: Jo March in Little Women the Musical, Nancy in Oliver!, Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro, and Eponine in Les Miserables. Critics have described Maddy's performances as "hauntingly beautiful" (DC Metro Theatre Arts) and "soulful beyond her years" (Simon Cowell, American Idol Season 9). And most recently, Necci at Richmond's Auricular described Maddy as "a soulful vocalist who brings a retro-jazz sound that feels like it stepped right out of the World War II era".

Stephen Sondheim was born in New York on 22 March 1930, and is widely acknowledged as the most innovative, most influential and most important composer and lyricist in modern Broadway history. For more than 50 years, Stephen Sondheim set an unsurpassed standard of brilliance and artistic integrity in the musical theatre. His accolades included an Academy Award, eight Tony Awards (more than any other composer) including the Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre, multiple Grammy Awards, multiple Drama Desk awards and a Pulitzer Prize.

Sondheim wrote the music and lyrics for Saturday Night (1954), A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum (1962), Sweeney Todd (1979), and Into The Woods (1987). He also wrote lyrics for West Side Story (1957) and Gypsy (1959). Sondheim received the Tony Award for Best Score/Music/Lyrics for Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Into The Woods and Passion, all of which won the New York Drama Circle award for Outstanding /Best Musical, as did Pacific Overtures and Sunday In The Park With George. In total, his works have accumulated more than sixty individual and collaborative Tony Awards.
